Toward a Measure of Patriotic and Nationalistic Attitudes

This article develops and evaluates measures designed to distinguish different forms of attachment to the nation, particularly patriotism and nationalism. The authors argue that national attachment is multidimensional rather than a single attitude and examine how its dimensions relate differently to opinions on international and nuclear-policy issues. The study provides an important empirical foundation for distinguishing positive identification with one’s country from beliefs in national superiority.
